When I was visiting Syon House & Park, the conservatory area was fenced off for visitors because a movie was being filmed there and, for this reason, photos were prohibited there. The Great Conservatory is stunningly beautiful, designed by Charles Fowler, an architect who specializes in large industrial buildings and the use of new metalworking technologies. In Syon, he created a building whose delicate structure was combined with a neoclassical elevation in a Palladian model. The house at Syon Park was designed by the pioneering 18th-century architect Robert Adam and has been in the family of the present owners for 400 years. Oliver Cromwell held a council meeting here in 1647, while Charles I visited Syon House several times between 1646 and 1648, largely to see his younger children, who were under Algernon’s care. The story – possibly true, possibly apocryphal – is one of the more vivid (and certainly one of the grisliest) tales tied to the Syon estate.
